Modern geometry takes many different guises, ranging from geometric topology and symplectic geometry to geometric analysis (which has a significant overlap with PDE and geometric measure theory) to dynamical problems. Contact geometry is an analog of symplectic geometry which works for certain manifolds of odd dimension. Its rough on the edges, chatty and repetitive and maybe even has a forbidding style, but details to most computations should be there. Also, we note that on the helicoid u and v ' ' can take all real values, whereas on the catenoid corresponds isometrically to the whole catenoid of parameter a. 3. I will begin with a description of the Teichmuller metric and deformations of translation surfaces. The main text for the course is "Riemannian Geometry" by Gallot, Hulin and Lafontaine (Second Edition) published by Springer. The 36th meeting of the Texas Geometry and Topology Conference will be held on October 27-29, 2006 at Rice University. In higher dimensions, the Riemann curvature tensor is an important pointwise invariant associated with a Riemannian manifold that measures how close it is to being flat. Euler characteristic, simplicial complexes, classification of two-dimensional manifolds, vector fields, the Poincar�-Hopf theorem, and introduction to three-dimensional topology. To those ends, I really cannot recommend John Lee's "Introduction to Smooth Manifolds" and "Riemannian Manifolds: An Introduction to Curvature" highly enough. "Smooth Manifolds" covers Stokes Theorem, the de Rham theorem and more, while "Riemnannian Manifolds" covers connections, metrics, etc.

At the start of the 19th century the discovery of non-Euclidean geometries by Gauss, Lobachevsky, Bolyai, and others led to a revival of interest, and in the 20th century David Hilbert employed axiomatic reasoning in an attempt to provide a modern foundation of geometry. Listing wrote a paper in 1847 called Vorstudien zur Topologie although he had already used the word for ten years in correspondence. In a sense, research for describing the geometry of spacetime is still underway by astrophysicists, and Riemann's ambitions in the third section of his inaugural address are not yet completely realised.
