Just wrote to the chair--last week--and found that they indeed did receive over 80 applications. In contrast, I focus on threats, specifically threats made in conjunction with rebellion in the Central African Republic (CAR). Maybe SOAS is different, but I think it's pretty standard. In other words, the example in that article was not particularly relevant to my broader thesis. I think there’s a very vocal minority on both ends.

The stolid, stilted narrator, while condescending and racist, illuminates both the "primitive" ways of the documentary's subjects and the social naivete of the film-makers http://agiosioanniskalyvitis.gr/books/transparency-and-conspiracy-ethnographies-of-suspicion-in-the-new-world-order. He then became a professor at the University of Pennsylvania where he pursued his interest in nonverbal communication and kinesics. Birdwhistell found most of his studies through observing people interactions in films. His interest in kinesics led him to study the way people used their bodies or bodily gestures to communicate nonverbally. His observations concluded that people use eye movement, facial expressions, and their chest to convey information http://femtalent.cat/library/american-ideals. In US culture, we treasure independence, but that independence must be exercised within the constructed social institutions. If, in particular, it is concerned with generalizing about patterns of human behaviour seen in all their dimensions and with achieving a total description of social and cultural phenomena, this is because anthropology has observed small-scale societies, which are simpler or at least more homogeneous than modern societies and which change at a slower pace , e.g. http://femtalent.cat/library/umleavyo-the-dilemma-of-parents.

To develop an understanding of what it is like to live in a setting, the researcher must both become a participant in the life of the setting while also maintaining the stance of an observer, someone who can describes the experience with a measure of what we might call "detachment." In other words, the example in that article was not particularly relevant to my broader thesis. But overall my position remains unchanged, because The Guardian was not presented as evidence, but an illustration of a trend which I have long commented upon http://rockyridgeorganicfarms.com/books/china-mission-a-personal-history-from-the-last-imperial-dynasty-to-the-peoples-republic
. Least influenced has been economics, which, largely holding to a dichotomy between market and nonmarket societies, finds no need to expand its explanatory system to the world of primitive man and hence remains relatively uninfluenced by the data of anthropology and the role of culture in the operations of the market place. The infusion of anthropological thought into the scholarly understanding of modern society has had wide-ranging practical applications , e.g. http://agiosioanniskalyvitis.gr/books/genetic-geographies-the-trouble-with-ancestry

. A long review of the formalist-substantivist debate led him also to endorse Polanyi’s ideas, while the whole book attempted to redeem a universal concept of rationality from its abuse in the hands of liberal economists and their sympathizers. Abdolghaffar Nadim in his book `Gashin' that is written in Baluchi language says: "The Baluchi folklore is being inspired by the Baluchi way of life and, therefore, could have addressed many needs of the tribal people who were forced to settle their disputes on the basis of their traditions and customs in the absence of a powerful central government."
